David I. Finkelstein is a neurologist based in Melbourne, VIC 3010. He looks after people with a range of brain and nervous system conditions, from movement problems to memory and thinking changes.
In clinic, David often works with patients who have movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, secondary Parkinsonism, multiple system atrophy, and cerebellar multiple system atrophy. He also sees people with Huntington disease and other conditions that can affect movement, balance, and co-ordination. Some patients come in for problems like supranuclear ophthalmoplegia, where eye movements can be affected, or for other rarer neurological syndromes.
He also helps with dementia and related conditions. This can include Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia (LBD), and other types of dementia, including cases where thinking and behaviour are changing. At times, neurological symptoms can overlap with sleep, movement, or vision issues, so getting the right picture matters.
Another part of his work involves the nervous system’s “automatic” functions, not just movement and thinking. This can include familial dysautonomia and other autonomic problems. Some patients also have gut-related nerve issues, such as gastroparesis, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, or short bowel syndrome, where digestion and gut movement can be affected.
Over time, David’s practice covers both common and complex presentations. He understands that neurological symptoms can change slowly, or sometimes come on in steps. In many cases, people need help not only with diagnosis, but also with planning what to do day to day as the condition evolves.
David works with patients across different ages and situations, including people with Down syndrome who may develop specific neurological concerns. He also looks at conditions where the nervous system can be affected by toxins or other causes, including neurotoxicity syndromes, as well as cases linked to hemochromatosis.
If you’re managing a condition like Parkinson’s, dementia, or one of the rarer neurological syndromes listed above, David’s role is to sort through the symptoms and help guide next steps in a clear, grounded way.
