Dr Loretta Lau is a Paediatric Medical Oncologist based in Randwick, in Sydney’s east. She works at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Level 1 South, High Street, Randwick NSW 2031.
In her work, Dr Lau looks after children and their families when a child has cancer. This can start from the first weeks after diagnosis, or after treatment has begun and things need careful check-ins. Cancer care for kids isn’t just about one treatment. It’s also about staying on top of how the child is coping day to day.
Her focus includes chemotherapy for children with cancer, plus monitoring and managing side effects that can come with treatment. She also helps with supportive care, which often means helping a child feel more comfortable while their body adjusts to treatment. At times, pain management becomes a big part of the plan too, so symptoms are taken seriously and treated in a steady, practical way.
Over time, Dr Lau builds a care plan that aims to be clear and realistic for families. Cancer treatment can be hard to understand at first, and it can feel like a lot to juggle. In many cases, what families need most is calm guidance, careful follow-up, and a team approach that keeps communication going. She brings experience in working through the ups and downs that can happen during treatment, including times when things improve and times when more support is needed.
If a child is having problems because of treatment, Dr Lau’s role is to assess what’s going on and help manage it. This may include reviewing symptoms, adjusting supportive medicines, and watching closely so complications are picked up early. The aim is to keep care safe, organised, and focused on the child’s wellbeing, not just the scans and medicines.
